Steel weight calculator — sheet, plate and rebar

Steel weight is volume × density: a 2 m × 1 m × 6 mm mild-steel sheet weighs 94.2 kg. Enter a sheet, plate or rebar bundle below and get the weight in kilos or pounds — free, no signup, metric or imperial.

How the steel weight is worked out

For sheet and plate, the calculator multiplies length × width × thickness to get the volume, then applies the metal's density — 7,850 kg/m³ for mild steel, with the standard densities for stainless, aluminium, copper and brass.

For rebar, it uses the standard unit weights every steel yard quotes: a 12 mm bar weighs 0.888 kg per metre, a #4 bar 0.668 lb per foot, and so on. Total weight is bar length × number of bars × unit weight.

How to use the steel weight calculator

  1. Choose what you are weighing — sheet or plate, or rebar.
  2. Pick the metal and type the size: length, width and thickness for sheet; bar size, bar length and count for rebar.
  3. Read the weight of one piece and of the whole order before you book transport or price the job.

How much does a 2 m × 1 m × 6 mm steel sheet weigh?

94.2 kg for one sheet. The sheet is 2 × 1 × 0.006 m = 0.012 m³ of steel, and mild steel weighs 7,850 kg per cubic metre: 0.012 × 7,850 = 94.2 kg. The four sheets the calculator opens on come to 376.8 kg.

The same page weighs rebar by the bar: ten 12 m bars of 12 mm rebar — the calculator’s other default — total 120 m of bar at 0.888 kg per metre, which is 106.6 kg (234.9 lb).

Before you order steel

  • Weigh the whole order, not one piece — four 6 mm sheets are 376.8 kg, and that total decides the pickup and the crew you need.
  • The calculator uses nominal sizes. Rolled plate can vary a few percent from its nominal thickness, so allow a small margin when a lift or a rack limit is tight.
  • Rebar comes in standard lengths — 12 m bars in the Gulf — so round your count to full bars and let the calculator total the weight.
Questions

Steel Weight Calculator

How much does a 12 mm rebar weigh per metre?+

0.888 kg per metre — the standard unit weight for a 12 mm bar. A standard 12-metre bar therefore weighs about 10.7 kg, and fifty bars about 533 kg.

How much does a steel sheet 2 m × 1 m × 6 mm weigh?+

94.2 kg. The sheet is 0.012 m³ of steel, and mild steel weighs 7,850 kg per cubic metre. Four sheets come to 376.8 kg — worth knowing before the pickup arrives.

How do you work out the weight of a steel plate?+

Multiply length × width × thickness to get the volume, then multiply by the metal’s density. Mild steel is 7,850 kg per m³, so a plate of 0.012 m³ weighs 94.2 kg — the calculator does this sum for five metals.

How much does a 16 mm rebar weigh per metre?+

1.578 kg per metre — the standard unit weight for a 16 mm bar. One standard 12 m bar weighs 18.9 kg. The weight per metre follows the rule 0.006165 × diameter², with the diameter in millimetres.

How much does a #4 rebar weigh?+

0.668 lb per foot (0.994 kg per metre), so a 20 ft bar weighs 13.36 lb. US bar numbers are the diameter in eighths of an inch: a #4 is a ½-inch bar — close to a 12 mm metric bar, not identical.

Is stainless steel heavier than mild steel?+

Slightly. Stainless 304 is 7,930 kg per m³ against 7,850 for mild steel — about 1% heavier at the same size, which is why the calculator keeps a separate density for it.

Why is aluminium used where weight matters?+

Aluminium is 2,700 kg per m³ — roughly one-third the weight of steel at 7,850 kg per m³. The same sheet in aluminium weighs about a third as much, which is why it is chosen for shutters, cladding and light frames.

How much does 6 mm steel plate weigh per square metre?+

47.1 kg per m². One square metre at 6 mm thick is 0.006 m³, and 0.006 × 7,850 kg/m³ = 47.1 kg — a fast check when a supplier quotes plate by the square metre.

How do you weigh a round bar or a circular plate?+

Use the cylinder volume: π × radius² × length — or × thickness for a plate — then multiply by the metal’s density. The method is the same as for flat sheet; only the volume shape changes.

What rebar sizes does the calculator cover?+

Metric bars of 10, 12, 16, 20 and 25 mm, and US bars from #3 to #8 — the sizes Gulf and US steel yards quote every day. Any other diameter follows the same weight rule: 0.006165 × diameter² kg per metre.

Does the calculator add waste or a cutting allowance?+

No — it gives the exact net weight of the sizes you enter. Add your own allowance for offcuts when you order, and remember rolled sections can vary slightly from their nominal size.

Does the calculator price the steel?+

No — it weighs, it does not price. Steel prices move with the market and your supplier, so the price belongs in your own price book. InstaJack turns the weight into a priced quote line when you are ready.
